A gold necklace may exist as a simple chain. In earlier times, this was a more common choice as the material was hard to find and required more work to process. Today, the precious metal is more widely available and hence more affordable. This has also lead to increased options as far as design and style.

When purchasing a gold necklace, a variety of lengths are available. Choker, princess, opera, and rope are some such options. Depending on current trends and what items are attached to the piece, a different length will be called for.

The right gold necklace length will also be influenced by body type. For instance, someone with a very large body may wish to avoid choker styles because these make the body look even larger in comparison. A longer style necklace with larger pieces may be preferable as it visually reduces body size in contrast.
